Weighing it a around 150 pages, A Brief History of Time would normally be a quick read. But the concepts and ideas contained within those pages will have you going back to read and re-read passages merely to attempt wrapping your mind around what Hawking is explaining.

Beginning with an explanation of the basic principles of relativity, curved space theory, and light wave propagation, then delving into the concepts of the origins of the universe, black holes, singularities, and string theory, this book is designed to provide the layman with a basic understanding of extremely complex theoretical physics. And at that, it does a wonderful job.

Although Hawking does marvelously in attempting to keep the language simple and the allegorical concepts accurate, the truth is that there is no easy and straightforward way to explain some of what he is putting forth in this book.
