Having Faith
by Sandra Steingraber
by Sandra Steingraber
This is a brilliant book. The author lovingly describes her first pregnancy while detailing the environmental hazards that constantly threaten the developing baby. Steingraber, a biologist/ecologist, uses scientific research to explain the dangers of mercury in fish and lead paint in homes, along with many lesser known, yet dangerous, toxins. I was most surprised to learn that breast milk is "the most contaminated of all human foods" due to the chemicals we take in and concentrate throughout our lives (though it's still usually a better option than formula). This book should be required reading for everyone, but especially for the companies that pollute the environment and the government charged with regulating them.
