If you're trying to get the essence of the Christian Gospel, then this book captures it with clarity and wit.

As the author says in the afterword, there is not much in here that is new. Kind of makes sense. In one sense the message was laid down an eternity ago, or two thousand years ago, so it's not new in an absolute sense. An yet the organized church has let its attempts to clarify and codify and control the core message obscure a clear view of the message itself. What was new 10 years ago at the first writing of Ragamuffin Gospel is the clarity of expression that Manning brings to the timeless message.

It's too early to call this a Christian classic. But read it now so that when it is a classic, you can say you've read it.
