The Color Purple
by Alice Walker
by Alice Walker
Raided from the local library, for when I driving. Had seen the film, but never read the book. The film (on second viewing - didn't like it first time - was good,) but the book outclassed this by a long way.
Alice walker, as reader of the story was excellent, as well as excellent in the role of author.
She is one of the few authors who made 'good' characters believable and attractive. Ceilie is wonderful. Loved the way the story worked out into a reconcilliation of the main characters - even Mister. Unlike many 'feel good' stories, the bubble hasn't burst immediately after.
Loved her turn of phrase, those home-spun, but sharp and witty comments that came so often in the story. The use of dialect can often be irritating, but she used it so well that I could swallow it hook, line and sinker, and thoroughly enjoy it.

I didn't like the movie, so I've unfairly avoided the book. I'm adding it to my to-read list now.

Good Grief. What is the world coming to. Brian and Bonnie that you didn't like the sobfest that is 'The Colour purple'. It is one of my great cathartic films where I sit and howl, knowing i am being totally manipulated by Speilberg but adoring every minute of it. Great review though
First time I watched film was massively underwhelmed. Second time and having read book, was less underwhelmed by film, but Spielberg really weakened story.
Away from the film, have you come across the author's reading of her book? It really is worth it Approx £3 for a download. Now there's moving stuff.
I read this book many years ago, too quickly perhaps after having already seen the film, which was overdominant. I would like to give it another try because I think I could really love Celie.
Steve wrote: "I read this book many years ago, too quickly perhaps after having already seen the film, which was overdominant. I also suffered from constant outbreaks of "Why the hell would he have made that change to the story when the novel follows so much better a storyline?
The character of Celie on second listening to this version is now officially my favourite character in any novel.
