Kushiel's Scion was OK, but didn't quite live up to the first triolgy. Kushiel's Justice, however, is a vast improvement; Imriel really comes into his own as the book progresses. He finally starts figuring out who he is, and what is important to him, rather than identifying himself in relation to other characters or factions: Melisande's son, Phedre and Joscelin's foster-son, victim of the Mahrkagir, prince-of-the-blood, etc. etc. He is still all these things, but he finally stops angsting about them (as he did for most of KS) and starts living in the present, even daring to plan for the future.
On top of that, if I can just indulge myself a bit? Imriel and Sidonie practically singe the pages they appear on together. Imriel matures a lot over the course fo the book, but Imriel and Sidone together, dare I say it, rival and possibly even outshine Phedre and Joscelin's passion as a couple.
