It wouldn't be hard to accuse me of building up so much anticipation for the release of 'The Other Queen' that it was doomed to fail from the start. Much in the way 'The Other Boleyn Girl' movie was always going to tick me off - even if I do love Eric Bana. So, I am willing to cop a little of the flack when I say that I've found Gregory's latest and last Tudor novel effort a little disappointing. This was still a great book about the imprisonment of Mary Queen of Scots, I just felt it wasn't up to her usual high storytelling standards.

I do have a very legitimate reason for 'not feeling it' though and I'll briefly tell you about it here. I never really felt emotionally invested in any of the characters. There are a few reasons this happened and the first I think has much to do with the chapter length. Gregory is writing from three first person perspectives (just like 'The Boleyn Inheritance) however she never devotes more than a three page chapter at a time to each character. Most of the writing is also expository or a reflection of the character's thoughts. While this is good some of the time, the lack of dialogue and action seem to really slow the pace right down and kill the sense of urgency her novels are so famous for.

The other thing I wonder about is where she chose to start the story. It begins with Queen Mary's time under house arrest with Bess of Hardwick and her husband but I felt that it should have started much earlier. Gregory says in her podcast that she fell in love with Bess's character and I think her determination to have Bess as a major character and one of the three perspectives, jeopardised the story. I would much rather have read about the complex and juicy relationship she created between Bothwell and Queen Mary. She says such controversial things about the nature of their intimacies that I am surprised she didn't have the guts to just come out and write about it in detail. It's no good to reflect on the action, a character needs to be imbued by it!

Looking back on the novel that took me a week to read when it should have taken a day I can't help but speculate. Was Gregory contracted to write 6 Tudor novels and she was sick to death of them already? Has she lost some of the bravado I so admire her for and is trying to be a 'serious' writer? Did her publishers release this book so close to the movie because they knew it wasn't her usual best? I can only wonder...

Read this novel if: You have read 'The Virgin's Lover'. I didn't but I really think it will help in creating more of a chemistry with the book. If you've read all the other Tudor novels of Gregory's, give this a go but don't expect 'The Queen's Fool'.
Don't read this novel if: You're looking to read your first Philippa Gregory. Definitely not one to start with even if you love Queen Mary of Scots. You'll need to already be a fan to enjoy this one.

Mary I whole heartedly agree with your review.

Annie Thank you :-)

Kim I haven't read this yet, but I'm expecting to feel the same. While I have enjoyed most of her books (although I didn't enjoy The Virgin's Lover nearly as much as the others), everything has paled in comparison to The Queen's Fool.

Stephanie I completely agree. I've read just about everything that Philippa Gregory has written and this one pales in comparison to her others. It's still enjoyable but not nearly as engrossing as I had expected.

Donnilyn The Other Queen was my first Gregory book. I am currently reading The Queen's Fool. I enjoyed The Other Queen (my Scottish heritage was showing), but it is nice to know that her other books may be better.

Joe I agree with this a little. Def should not be the first P.G novel. I actually liked the fast chapters...longer chapters would have bored me i think. This is my last book of the Tudor Series. TOBG and TBI still reign supreme!!!

Tina I wish I had read your review before I picked up the book! This was my first Gregory novel and I was hugely disappointed! I was really hoping for more since I had heard such great things about her!

Lubna Im almost done with it now and i totally agree with your review. Its not as urgent and 'alive' as Gregory's other novels .
Also it feels very repetitive cause all the characters repeat the same mistakes throughout the novels , they dont learn from there mistakes like her other charcters , they are just stuck in a rut !!

Annie Totally agree Lubna

Funkyflowers Completely agree with you. I have started this book and given up 3 times. I finally decided to give it another try, but after getting just over half way have decided that life's too short to struggle through a book you're not enjoying.

Lisa Like Tina, this was my first full-length PG novel and was a bit disappointed because I couldn't get attached to the characters. YES, I wanted to hear more about the relationship between Mary and Bothwell with more interaction between characters instead of mostly thoughts. It's good to know that PG's other books are better and I'll give her another try.

Samantha Lenkic I agree with your review, I read in an interview that Philipa wanted to explore an unknown part of Mary's story. Because 'so much has already been written about her' but for me I didn't know a lot about Mary's story, I would've liked to read about Mary's life from the beginning and focused more on Mary than bess. It's a shame because I love all of the others but this one was not a good end to the series
