i just finished listening to this on audio. i’m not sure what i think of it. i don’t usually like sad books very well, but this one makes no bones about the fact that almost everyone–no, make that everyone–in the book dies at the end. heck, the book is narrated by “death”! in fact, death is the comic relief in this book. he’s funny, heartwarming, and seems like a really nice and reasonable guy. basically, it’s a story of nazi germany, only instead of being about dying jews, it’s about a small german town that gets bombed during the war. in fact, the only jew that you get attached to in the book lives! but most of the germans die. it’s a verrrry long book and probably could have been shortened quite a bit. but would it have been as strong if you weren’t as invested in the characters? hmmm….. i dunno.
