I had no idea from the excerpt that I read that this was a historical paranormal romance . I usually avoid reading historical romances due to the fact that a lot of them seem to be over dramatic with too much heaving of bosoms, etc. Be Mine Tonight was nothing like that at all.
The story revolves around Chapel, a 600 year old vampire who as a human mistakenly drank from the Blood Grail believing it to be the Holy Grail. The chalice transforms Chapel and his fellow soldiers. Believing that they are evil, the newly turned vampires surrender to the Catholic church for help.
Fast forward to 1899 and to Prudence Ryland, a young lady searching for the Holy Grail because she believes it will cure her cancer, giving her a new lease on life. After some research, Prudence convinces her father to buy land containing ruins near Tintengel. Somehow the Church gets wind of her endeavors and send Chapel and his keeper to take possession of the Grail if found.
Overall this was a great story. The chemistry between Prudence and Chapel is satisfying. A lot is spent on the message of living life to the fullest but Smith does it in a way that is not preachy . My only complaint is she doesn't really go into details about what her vampires can and can't do.
