I just finished The Book Thief, and I can honestly say that it was a very good read. Although the subject-matter is heavy, the narration and storyline is rarely without the slightest amount of humor. This greatly lightens the mood, and provides the book with an innocence so necessary for a young main character.
Although I found the language and word choice a bit awkward at first, it either got better or I got accustomed to it. One of those definitely happened though. Specifically, I am referring to the continual application of color to the sense of smell. It's an interesting approach, but I just felt like it wasn't applied as effectively and smoothly as it could have been.
That said, the book is told from the perspective of Death, who seems to have a well developed personality, and a formidable hesitance about his place in the world. It's a unique outlook, and there is probably no better entity suited for a book about the years of World War II.
