I gave this book 3 stars (instead of 4 only because I didn't like it quite as much as I did the other books by Peter Carey that I've read (My Life as a Fake, True History of the Kelly Gang, and Theft). Peter Carey is so talented that I feel justified in holding him to a higher standard.
It's hard to pin down exactly what I felt was missing from this novel. I guess it was the end that I wasn't crazy about, as the story and the characters start to drift off into an Australian sort of heart of darkness. It was effective in that the style of storytelling became darker and vaguer as the characters moved deeper into unexplored territory, but I think that I began to lose interest, and I missed the characters who were left behind in Sydney.
