I was at McNally Robinson's and they have the On Sale Books section. I always cruise through and have a look. I sat down to see if I wanted to read, and thus buy, Chelsea Cain's book, Heartsick. I looked up around page 34 (you've all experienced this, I'm sure) with that sense of doing something wrong. Sure enough, a store clerk was staring at me and I realized that more than ten minutes had passed. You know the look (then again, I do have a bad head cold, so maybe that wasn't the 'this isn't a library' look... no, that was most definitely the 'this is not a library look, lol!).
So her book passed my first test, does it draw me in—sucked in, is more like it. I picked her book up because I have a similar story thread (but different and I must admit she's done it way better then I have!).
So, yes I bought the book, and read it in three days. Characters are well developed and draw you in. Yes, I like Archie. I like Susan. I love hating Gretchen. And the supporting cast is well drawn and fleshed. The story twists and turns and drags you places you sometimes don't want to go. I never heard of Ms. Cain before, but I'll be heading out and picking up the other two books in this series. Also, I'm still sick, which is partly her fault. Instead of sleeping, I found myself reading (the coughing woke me, honest).
Although it's marketed as suspense fiction (which it is) I also recommend this book to those of you who love thrillers, especially, with a strong psychological twist; intelligent, grounded, yet emotionally real characters; multiple plot twists and good writing.
