I read Middlemarch over 30 years ago. I liked it but did not love it. This time around I loved it. Maybe it is a book that needs a little more life experience to truly appreciate. The portrayal of marriage throughout the novel is especially enlightening. We see what poor marriages look like and what good marriages look like. We see the influence of women, for both good and not so good, in the lives of those around them. I love that the inhabitants of Middlemarch are not perfect, but that most of them learn, grow and develop throughout the course of the novel. I love that some of them do not because that is what real life looks like too. I will reread this book again, hopefully much sooner than 30 years from now.
