It has never taken me so long to read a Jeffery Deaver book. Have you ever watched something and you couldn't get into it because you kept seeing the actor, not the character? I had that problem with this book. I haven't read all of his other stuff but definitely most, enough to know his voice. And I couldn't stop hearing it. It read, to me, like Jeffery Deaver speaking writing with an English accent and it was more than a bit disconcerting.

I was also a bit offput by the kinder, gentler Bond. Having seen some early criticism, I was half expecting the general discontent with the updated Bond to be because of the presentation of the more modern female characters. If people were unhappy with those, I wasn't among them. It was more his internal dialogue that threw me. I found his moral quandaries jarring and confusing. I'll read the next one, certainly, but I can't make any promises after that.
