** spoiler alert ** When their father leaves home in order to find the time and space to do his important work--writing--Elinor and William cope with his absence in different ways. Unexpectedly, their mother decides to fill the void he has left with a dog. But when they visit the local animal shelter, the family is captivated by not one but four different canines--plus Elinor simply must have a cat. The dogs quickly become a part of the family's lives, going on walks, taking up part of their beds, and protecting Mama. Elinor is the first to realize that these animals can talk, and when they talk, they have great insight into what's happening to the family. The dogs all different personalities and range from Neo, a Great Pyrenees, to little Bitty, an energetic terrier. When Papa finally comes home, the family has changed, and he must prove himself to them once again. After all, William is sure he will leave again once things hit a rocky patch.

This is a tender story filled with the precious moments that make up the daily lives of a family. It's also a tale of forgiveness and hope. MacLachlan chooses her every word carefully as she crafts a story that reveals the magic within and around each of us, if only we take the time to listen.
