This is my number 1 favorite Pearl Cleage book! Sister Pearl is a womanist and her characters are "free women". This novel is one of the most beautiful love stories I've ever read. The main character Avia is HIV positive and meets the love of her life in the most unlikely place. I love that Avia is not this pitiful "sick" woman but a woman the loves deeply and is open to the possibilities of life. I've read this book several times (ok like 15 I NEVER get tiered of it). Oh and the great thing is that in the books that follow all the characters are relatives are associates and so we get a snipet of what is happening in their lives.
