I saw the movie first, and it was impossible for me not to picture Gregory Peck while reading about Atticus Finch. He's such a compelling character--to fathers like myself he represents an ideal we aspire to. I thought so in the film, and the original novel has a few more scenes and dialog that are just so powerful in that way.

As a father I see the story through Atticus' eyes, but of course the story is REALLY told from the young daughter Scout (Jean Louise). As unique as she is, she's also so real that she just jumps off the page. There are times I laughed out loud when something surprised me, and it was bec always something Scout said or did. If this makes any sense, what makes her so real is when she does or says something so original, so un-cliche.
