really liked it
bookshelves: fiction
Read from September 18 to October 01, 2011

I really liked this book in a masochistic way – I felt conscious of, and embarrassed by, our North American rabid consumer society, our materialistic values, our disrespectful throw-away culture. Kantner’s language is beautiful – so evocative, and as his main character, Cutuk, matures he often turns inward, grappling with the big questions of life. In the first part I felt like I was reading about an exotically primitive faraway land with lives lived so differently from our norm; yet it’s virtually in our back yard. Difficult for me to get into for awhile (I dislike bleak, harsh and freezing) but ultimately a great read!
