Novels in verse fans will be delighted to find this companion book to Impulse, the author's earlier title. Hopkins centers her story around four protagonists, all searching for different types of the always illusive perfection. Cara, twin sister of Conner who attempted to kill himself in the earlier book, must deal with the expectations of her boyfriend and her family, who seem more interested in what others will think than what is actually right for Cara. Kendra denies herself food and plots to undergo the plastic surgeon's knife in order to have the perfect body for modelling. Sean takes performance-enhancing drugs to mold his body into a homerun-hitting machine. Andre tries to follow his own dreams for the future even while they go against those of his family. Reading about these characters and those who they encounter sometimes feels like watching a car skidding out of control: You know that something bad is about to happen, but you're helpless to stop the crash from occurring. It's always intriguing to follow the storylines Hopkins weaves and to trace her elegant writing as one person's story flows into the next one. An afterword shares part of the author's own journey to self-acceptance, and there are notes on plastic surgery and eating disorders.
