The preparation for the Olympics – Abdou’s insightful detailing of the grueling physical demands left me exhausted just reading about it. In alternating chapters we follow the stories of a female swimmer and male wrestler on their respective Canadian teams until their paths finally cross. The author prods the reader to look at society’s attitude toward the Olympics – the toll it takes on young individuals, and to examine our concepts of body image. I liked that she was not concerned with who wins or not – it is all about the pursuit of the medal and examining the big questions of life … “Finding out who I am once the swimming is over.” (p. 227)
