This book was so unique. It was a mix of world history, family history and recipes. I was so drawn into this book and I read the entire thing in a couple hours. I also have to confess, I dog-eared a lot of the recipes in it. (I know, dog-earing pages is BAD…but if it makes you feel better let’s pretend I just bookmarked them).

While the recipes are awesome, (so many deserts, oh my god!) I have to say that the family stories were my favorite. Some were funny, some sad, but each story triggered a memory of recipes and that’s pretty much how the book was arranged. The entire time that I was reading the book I kept thinking that this is pretty much how my family works. We’re of Irish decent and for holidays and special occasions there is a blend of traditional Irish fare as well as our favorite American foods.

I haven’t attempted any of the recipes yet, but I know I will be soon. First up on my list are the scalloped potatoes and rye bread. I have a feeling that this book will be one I reference for recipes for years to come. Especially around the holidays when I’ll feel less guilty about all the deserts I want to make.

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves to cook or who just loves a great story.
