This is an absolutely riveting story, set in a Marine company during the Vietnam War. The author served in Vietnam, and this book took him 30 years to write and get published. The action of the story isn't always on the battlefield, but is rather in the mind of Mellas, the main character. His observations of life in his company of Marines and his own actions are the crux of the story. Matterhorn is simply a masterfully-written book. It recently won the Washington State Book Award for fiction, and has won several other awards, all richly deserved. I am not one who reads war novels, but I recommend this one.
