The Macho Paradox: Why Some Men Hurt Women and How All Men Can Help
by Jackson Katz
by Jackson Katz
3.5 stars. J Katz goes over a lot in this book, which makes it more like an introduction to "men's work" and anti-sexist ideas in general. I really appreciate that Katz is honest about why more men don't get more involved in anti-sexist organizing: because we've all perpetuated misogyny and supported the rape culture to varying degrees, and that makes it extremely uncomfortable for men to start doing this work without feeling hypocritical and inconsistent.
That being said, I feel like Katz's book makes almost all of the same points as other "men in the movement" type books, which was a little disappointing. I enjoyed Paul Kivel's "Men's Work" a lot more (not to mention the fact that it was more interactive), I would have to say.
