Super Panalo Sounds!
by Lourd Ernest H. de Veyra
by Lourd Ernest H. de Veyra
"Near midnight at the UP Fair sometime in the early 90s. Superpanalo Sounds! were four genuine nobodies in a waiting area full of hippies, grungesters, metal-rap crossover thugs, and a variety of poseurs and their groupies." Milo David, saxophone; Dax Dimaculangan, guitar; Budik Hanopol, double bass; Zorro Nareja, drums; and Vic Zeñarosa, vocals. The Superpanalo Sounds! would puncture the hackneyed musical air that night/morning through two brilliantly orchestrated acts: 1. Throwing piss and crap at one famous band on stage, and 2. Conquering the crowd of the UP Sunken Garden, what was left of it in the wee hours of the morning, through their music, "the rhythms of a monstrously new sound." Superpanalo Sounds! had arrived.
It's the stuff of musical legend, the combinations of sounds, meth and mythos, characters driven by creativity, rage, genius. Rise from the humdrum beats, the tired riffs, the shitty sounds. Supepanalo Sounds!

Okay. I think Lourd Ernest Hanopol de Veyra might be on to something here. Superpanalo Sounds! is written with refreshing verve, humor, and imagination. I wonder if the UST Publishing House had a hand in censoring the curses in the book, but I just can't believe that de Veyra would censor himself. Also, several editorial errors managed to see print, a common problem with books published in the Philippines.
Still, five fucking stars.

I must agree with the missed errors! The editor of the novel is actually one of my former colleagues and he boasted it to me. :D

Can you ask your friend if the curses were censored or did Lourd really write them like *%#$! that? I think it detracts from the overall quality of the book aside from the editorial errors. I mean, fuck can send us to hell now?
Since the novel was printed by UST Publishing House, the curses may have been censored. That part was also disappointing because it is counter-Lourd and waters down the "sex, drugs and rock & roll" mood.

According to my friend, the editorial board did choose to replace the curses to please the priests. Lourd should have launched his book as an indie publication.

Kwesi, KD: I am recommending this to everyone in TFG.
Joselito wrote: "and why 5 stars?"The theme is rock 'n' roll, the writing is intense, at some points febrile, the plot can be termed as 'wasak', not traditional, not straightforward, there is humor, pathos, I wanted to say that Lourd may be a leading voice in Philippine lit along with his friend (your buddy) Iwa Wilwayco, but I haven't been exposed to much of our literature, still, it's mean writing, man, it's mean writing.

Sige, dadalhin ko 'to sa next breakfast natin, haha. Tingnan natin kung mag-agree ka na magaling magsulat si Lourd de Veyra. :D
