bookshelves: historical-fiction, gothic

Robert Goolrick has created a dark, gothic tale of obsession, lust, and betrayal. The characters are all flawed and very human. The plot moves along fast and keeps you reading into the night. The irony is the title. Ralph Truitt waits for what he supposes is a reliable wife to emerge from a train in the dead of winter in rural Wisconsin, 1907. What he gets is a complex woman with passions all her own that deceives and seduces her way into Ralph's heart. This would be a great winter read, to go along with the cold Wisconsin setting, but anytime is a good time to read it.
