I've been wanting to read Georgette Heyer for a long time. When I attended ALA this summer, I won FOUR free copies of any of her books that I chose. The Grand Sophy is one of her most popular so I put it on the list. I was NOT disappointed.

Heyer sets her novels in the Regency period, but she feels like an actual Regency author. What I love the most is that she is no pretender to the throne of Austen. I'm sick to death of weak spin-offs and pathetic attempts to copy Austen's style. Some authors hit the right note with spin-offs, but they are few and far between. Heyer's characters are completely her own, however, as is her writing style. She uses slang of the day, which Austen rarely used. Her characters are fresh and enchanting, her stories are well-paced, and the romance hits the perfect note. No melodrama here!

I'm Heyer's new biggest fan.
