I had mixed feelings about this book. It took me a while to get into it, but about half way through I was captured by the stories of the grandfather's past (and the writing is brilliantly done). But after I finished reading the book, I felt like the whole thing didn't come together very well. There was no finality - just kind of like a "life goes on" type deal. I felt I had been promised a mystery all along the way, but it was never delivered.

Cecily I think you're right: it doesn't quite hang together. It's excellent for a first novel, but wonder if it might have been better as a collection of related short stories.
