Donoghue knows how to build suspense--parts of the book were more compelling than anything I'd read in a long time. The choice of unusual subject matter and a five-year-old narrator sets the book apart; a reviewer described it accurately as "an entirely original work of art." The author handles her material well and is convincing in taking us inside the mind of a child. Recommended to readers looking for something different, particularly those interested in children, and who don't mind a subtext of violence.
