I really enjoyed this book. Carpenter grew up here in Washington and found herself in the ghetto of Oakland, farming on squatted land. While I don't see myself ever doing such a thing, I found myself more able to relate to her than young women farming books I have read. (The Dirty Life: On Farming, Food, and Love comes to mind.) Her relationship with the food she grows and raises and the community in which she does it in is palpable.
