‘Matilda’ is a children’s novel by Roald Dahl about an exceptionally gifted and sensitive little girl who is unfortunate enough to be born into a family who have no appreciation of her whatsoever. Her parents are far more interested by other distractions such as money and TV. At the tender age of four, Matilda is teaching herself to read, progressing from basic children’s book to more challenging authors such as Dickens. Naturally Matilda can’t wait to start school where her gifts and talents are instantly realised to the dissatisfaction of the school principal, the terrifying Miss Trunchbull. The story describes how one seemingly small and powerless child manages to wreak revenge on the horrible adults in her life. This is a great read for children and adults of all ages as its appeal is recognised on so many different levels as young children thoroughly get to enjoy the comic acts of revenge on the adults and their downfalls.
