This is an odd book, it's sad and touching and inspiring... in retrospect, but while I was reading it I found it rather depressing. It's the story of a family told in different ways through the thoughts of the different family members, their views are all skewed in a different way but none of them seem to have a very nice life for it, hence the depressing feel. I guess it does make you stop and try to think about your life in a different way which is positive, but I couldn't help but come away wondering if everyone has such a bleak outlook no matter what you do to try and make their lives better, more comfortable or more rewarding. The opposite of the American Dream really, slightly reminiscent of "Death of a Salesman". A decent read with a touching and possibly inspiring close, just not very cheerful!
