A fine start to what became a winning series of medieval mysteries starring Brother Cadfael, erstwhile crusader turned monk and herbalist. The writing sometimes meanders lovingly over descriptions that would have made Ernest Hemingway grumpy, but the insights into Welsh character and the medieval mindset here are particularly good.
