Read from September 13 to 22, 2011

This is a very readable account of a subject that I have deliberately avoided in the past. The storyof the demise of Pompeii and accounts of the discoveries have always struck me as rather gruesome. Mary Beard brings the whole thing to life in a fascinating and, at times, funny way. I now feel that I want to visit Pompeii and see the archaeological remains myself, especially the Villa of the Mysteries and the House of Menander. I really will have to buy a camper van.
