Wow this book was dark, very dark. It felt creepy just reading certain chapters. As always, extremely well written on his part. Some of the details were incredibly clear for someone so young and I have read many others challenging that...but in my opinion, it is not my place to judge anothers memory. Everyone is different in terms of what they can recall from childhood, espeically when those events are traumatic. It is amazing what a traumatized child can tell you in detail about things.

Very sad story.I now feel like I get his other books on a much deeper level.

Maryanne Raphael Would love to read this but I am so busy catching up with my deadlines for the books I am supposed to be waiting. My agent is waiting for me to finish my book and I am taking too many breaks.
I am also doing lots of research, reading about Molokai and Hansen's disese. Have fun with your books. Maryanne

bjneary Ordered this book---can't wait to read this---loved Running with Scissors, haven't read DRY yet either!

Jennifer It is interesting thus far...I must say I LOVE him but am finding myself having a hard time understanding how his memory of his very early childhood (events before he was 1 years old are captured vividly) is so clear. Its not my place to challenge anyones memory as we all have varying degrees of ability in this area I guess.

Jennifer I hear you! When I wrote my memoir I refused to read any other memoirs so I wasn't influenced in anyway by anothers writing. I had a stack of books that I dove into once I completed my manuscript!!! :)

Maryanne Raphael Speaking of stacks of books I have collected almsot one hundred to read once I have breathing time. Yesterday 72 copies of What Mother Teresa Taught Me arrived. I am preparing for book tour in Ohio with more book signings in California when I return in August and in the meantime trying to get Saints of Molokai finished.
thank God I love books and writing but I wish I could work in more fun reading now.

bjneary I gave my friend your book and she loved it! I will continue to pass it on and it will be a nonfiction/biography book I booktalk to reading classes in the fall!
I love Augusten too and I wonder sometimes but if they say they remember it, good for them, my childhood memories are not so vivid...

Jennifer You're the best BJ...thank you so much for your support!!!!

Cynthia I think Jennifer's review summed this book up perfectly. I have nothing to add. I may have to go back and re-read some of his earlier works with a different mindset.
