I re-read this book because I recommended it to my husband and he didn't like it, and I was pretty sure something was terribly wrong with him, but it had been long enough since I read it that it seemed fair to double-check. We had a dilemma because this anniversary edition is different than the original and we couldn't decide which one to buy, and I probably should have insisted he read the original because this one is longer and "interminable" is one of his most frequently used terms of opprobium.

Well, I was right and he is wrong, this is a terrific book. However - as much as it pains me to admit an editor is right about asking for cuts - I kind of wish we'd bought the original edition. I know there are people who are such passionate fans that every word the guy writes is precious. But while I don't know for sure exactly which parts are the additions, I can guess about some of them, and the pace is obviously much better in the later part of the book, where most of that stuff isn't.

But, those are quibbles. It's still a great ride.
