One of my favourite Persephone books. I was sending a list of recommendations to someone, stuck this at the end and then had to take it off the shelf straight away for a re-read. It's completely charming, and I thoroughly recommend it to everyone. Miss Buncle is a quiet spinster who needs a bit of extra money, and she considers keeping chickens, but her servant doesn't like them. So instead she writes a book under the name John Smith, based loosely on her neighbours, and it becomes a bestseller, much to the horror of the local community, who are desperate to identify the author. Fun, charming, and you just have to smile throughout.
