I remember when the movie came out a few years ago and was considered "Oscar-worthy." I figured if a movie was supposedly that good (I didn't see it, so I don't know if it was), the book must be even better. I was disappointed. Even the back of the book suggested that there was something worse than being convicted of murder that kept Hanna from defending herself. It was...(gasp!) that she was illiterate. I figured that out long before the main character did and wasn't that impressed with the rest of the story. I guess the good thing was that the story didn't take long to read. And I like descriptive authors. Schlink was good at describing both people (or at least Hanna) and places.
