Another great collection of familiar essays by Anne Fadiman. the joys in this volume derives from the way Fadiman gently draws your attention to some topic you've never really paid much mind to, then increases your interest in it.
The pieces on coffee and ice cream address topics already dear to my heart, but what makes the book is the way she made me interested in Charles Lamb, who wasn't even previously on my radar screen. The last essay in the collection hits home for me in a particular way, as it describes her experience witnessing death in the backcountry.
