This novel has some densely evocative prose. In the first fifty pages, I was sent scurrying for my dictionary on no less than a dozen occasions (and I've read extensively my entire life). The characters seem to be possessed by a certain ennui due to the heat and alternating squalor and luxury of the setting; the Egyptian city of Alexandria. My intention is to finish the entire Alexandria Quartet before I die. Judging by my two failed attempts upon 'Justine' I am not off to a promising start.
