I picked this book up because I heard a great deal about it online from other readers. It's about a young black slave who is traded to a harsh owner during the Revolutionary War. As she is torn from her little sister and meets another slave who attempts to help her in some way, she struggles to find a way of escaping her situation.

I found it really interesting how the author and slaves comment on the irony of the Americans requesting and demanding their freedom when they own individuals themselves. This conversation isn't discussed enough in literature or in classrooms. Therefore, I really enjoyed it in this text.

I didn't really like the main character. I felt she was too much a hollow character. She seemed artificial. I'm not sure why I felt this, but I definitely didn't enjoy her narration. Overall, I only kind of liked this novel. I really looked forward to the sequel.
