I probably like this book more for what I learned than for the writing per se -- felt very much like a collection of articles from other sources (indeed, according to the dust jacket some chapters were adapted from various magazines). I appreciate Jacobsen's expansive view of "American" and particularly enjoyed having my preconceptions of epicurean quality challenged (e.g. light vs. dark roasted coffee and the texture of chocolate).
