I liked this book more than I didn't like it. The main character, Julie, was so resourceful in her poverty. I'm not sure I'd be as resourceful as she was. Hank needed to grow up - I think the baby coming so early and Julie getting sick forced him to grow up and I saw him become more of a man after that.

The ending was not the usual happily ever after fact, it presented itself as more of a beginning...a beginning to a new life, a better understanding between the characters, and a maturing of both Julie and Hank.
