One often finds with great books that the title perfectly complements the story within, but the exploration of the stated theme in One Hundred Years of Solitude is so thorough, precise, and perfect that I imagine the book was completed by a divine being as the perfect realization of the title.
As promised, Marquez delves deeply into the feelings, thoughts and actions behind the solitude of the Buendia family and their hometown of Maconda, from their founding, rise, and eventual decline one hundred years later.
The full scope of flawed character is on display in the Buendia home. In an average novel, with its shorter scope, a character flaw may take the course of a book to reveal its consequence. In this book, an ingrained stubbornness or irrelevant obsession will consume years and destroys lives in a matter of pages.
