Part of me wishes I hadn't seen the film first. I kept having flashes of Daniel Craig, Rhys Ifans, and Samantha Morton acting out new scenes in my head as there are quite a few things that are different in the novel (though I think I added scenes from the film to the plot of the novel as well). Certainly the suspense in due to suffer when you know what's going to happen...
I wasn't a fan of the first person narration, but it did lead me to question the narrator's sanity as his wife surely did. The tone suddenly changed when Joe goes off to buy his gun--it was almost like he was a different character altogether--but perhaps this was intentional?
Still, McEwan is a skilled writer. I know I'm in good hands when I read his work, for better or for worse.
