Here's the thing about Lev Grossman's style: I don't like it.

But I appreciate how he sticks with it. The snark, the tone, the stubborn realism of his flawed characters-- right up to the stubbornly underwhelming ending (which, let's face it, is also probably the most realistic) for its flawed main character.

The story didn't get a pulse until page 236, and then lost its momentum a few short chapters later. Other than that, though, while I wouldn't consider the time spent reading this book to be wasted, I definitely could have enjoyed other novels.
