Read from July 15 to 23, 2004 — I own a copy , read count: once

This was a bookclub pick for October 2004. Since that was quite awhile ago, I don't remember a lot of details but do remember that it was a fast read that was somewhat refreshing because it was different. While I've read many books about slavery, this is the first one that has a white woman as a slaveowner who is also more or less a slave herself to her horrible husband.
Everything about the circumstances surrounding this novel is horrible; there is really nothing good that happens or that comes out of it and no one is likeable. While at times I felt sorry for both the slave (Sarah) and the woman slave owner (Manon), I didn't like them; however, given their lot in life, I could see why they would be unlikeable.
Having said all that, since I've now revisited this novel, I would like to find the time to reread it. This happens a lot when I go back and try to review books I've read in the past; unfortunately, I have so many unread books on my shelves that I seldom am able to do it.
