** spoiler alert ** When I think of a pearl, I think of something beautiful, made by nature, and found in the sea. A girl named Pearl, nicknamed Bean, lives with her mother and grandfather. Her best friend, Henry, lives down the street with his mother. Bean notices that there is an undercurrent of distrust between her mother and grandfather to the point that grandfather seems to act like two different persons to each of them.

Henry and Bean have been best friends forever; yet, there seems to be a more endearing relationship brewing. They both have a missing father and neither mother wants to talk about their father. However, there is one thing in common. Both fathers seemed to just leave. But, there is something that seems too common about the two fathers.

I would highly recommend this book to students who have family issues similar to Bean and Henry.
