I've never met a Chris Van Allsburg book I didn't adore. In the Queen of the Falls, he tells the story of the first woman to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel. Never mind that she was a plump, proper, 62 year-old Charm school teacher who needed money for her retirement! Her life after the event wasn't as she had expected, and I appreciate that Van Allsburg didn't sugar coat this--she was cheated and never gained the fame or fortune she desired. Detailed sepia-toned illustrations add a vintage look to the story, easily setting us into 1901. Another winner!
