This is a surprisingly heartwarming (and in a good way, not a sticky-sweet way) "issue" book that would be a good pick for middle school girls looking for realistic fiction that isn't too gritty. The mother is neglectful, the step-father tries hard, the other adults in Addie's life try hard, and Addie is resourceful without being unrealistically so. It's also nice to see a book where poverty is an issue, but a manageable one.
