Definitely a hard-to-put-down book. Eve catches a case and is put off her stride from the beginning by the reappearance in Roarke's life of an old flame, Magdalena. Hurting, while the reader hurts right along with her, Eve tries to concentrate on the case but finds it difficult to impossible. The solution to the case and the way Roarke deals with Magdalena are great moments, but Eve must feel like Cassandra, trying to get people to listen to her with no one paying attention. Once she does get them to believe her, things really get moving. I thought the murderer was going to get away clean, but Eve pulls it off. Great moments? Sommerset and Eve and their few moments of rapport over Magdalena and especially the chocolate fudge brownies. Mavis talking to baby Bella about "poopie" and Mavis explaining to Eve how to recognize a con when she replays the video clip from the news featuring Magdalena and Roarke. (I love the way Eve not only sees the outside package but straight to the inside of a person. Magdalena is beautiful but it is an empty beauty and Eve sees it right away.) The description of Rayleen's bedroom is masterful, too, with all the dolls and their dead eyes staring. But my very favorite moment in the book is when Eve clocks Magdalena. I almost cheered out loud. It's bad enough to laugh so often in these books when there are people around wondering what you are laughing about, but a cheer might have been a bit much. Oh, and the candy thief strikes again. I'm no nearer to figuring out whether it's Baxter than I was before.
