really liked it

I am not a science fiction fan, so I had only read the Butler novel that many agree is least like science fiction: Kindred. This is an enjoyable read, though. I like the subtlety. There is much in it that can be read as at least an allegory for social ills in the United States, so it makes you think about those issues, but those parallels become more prominent after you've put the book down (even if temporarily). That is, the parallels don't necessarily intrude while you are enjoying the story. (Also note: there is a good bit of violence here, but not often graphically rendered.)
